Emerald Profile

--------------

Emerald is a country town situated 52 km south-east of Melbourne in the Dandenong Ranges.

Nobelius Nursery in the past, was the largest plant nursery in the Southern Hemisphere and alluvial gold was found there from 1858. A new Emerald Museum has been constructed on the Nursery site and Emerald Primary School children have been involved in ongoing heritage activities under the guidance of Mr. Gus Ryberg.

The world famous Puffing Billy passes both the school and the Heritage Nursery on its way to beautiful Emerald Lake. This original train line has been extended towards Cockatoo and Gembrook. We are proud that in 1995, we adopted a profile of this train as our new School Logo.

Currently the population of the extended district is approximately 6800, with a primary school population of about 550 and a secondary college enrolment of about 900. Both primary and secondary college draw their children from the town and surrounding district for a radius of approximately seven kilometres.

Local occupations range from a few farmers, with many others involved in rural and township support services, to an increasing number of residents travelling to work in the suburbs of Melbourne.

The grounds of the school are pleasantly treed and back onto the Puffing Billy rail-line.

With a school site of 2.2 ha (including .6 ha on the north side of Heroes Avenue), playing area is limited. The building of four permanent classrooms and the loss of four single portables has provided some much-needed space that has been extensively landscaped.

The recently opened Gemco Performing Arts Centre on the site neighbouring the school and Puffing Billy is a shared resource we look forward to making wide use of in the near future.
