Police
by Brad and Gareth
In Emerald 1858 there was two police men and the police house was a tent. One day one of the police men went to settle a dispute over near Monbulk,. He got lost on the way back and was never seen again! (Years later a man claimed to see an old figure wearing a old police clothing!) Hear Graeme Legg tell us that story on the multimedia page.
In about 1990 on they built the police station on Kilvington drive then eight years ago they built new one next door...it has only one police officer.

The old police station from 1900's is still there on Kilvington Drive but now it's a house . The new police station is next door. |
Next door is the new police station. Jack and Tim are looking at the cars and motorbikes....they could not work out why one police officer would need all of them!! |
Fire
Brigade
by Brad and Gareth
The fire brigade has been around for a long time
in Emerald but we couldn't find out much about it. Bushfires have always been bad
here. In 1985 Ash Wednesday burnt a lot of Cardinia Dam and wrecked Cockatoo.

Health
Services
by Brad and Gareth
For many years if your were sick, you had to
go miles and miles to find a doctor. The first doctor came to Emerald in the 1950's.
The only hospital was in UFTG. Since 1952 there has been one in UFTG. The
Ambulance has been in Emerald since 1980's this was after the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

Public
Transport
by Brad and Gareth
Puffing Billy did a lot of the transport but some of it was done by buses too. Did you know the U.S Bus lines started off as Belgrave United motor services then shortened to United services and then shortened to US Bus lines. They have always been used to take us school kids on camps, excursions and to swimming.

THE EMERALD HALL
By Joanne and Jess
The Mechanics Institute was the library and the only hall in Emerald for many years. It was destroyed by fire in the 1950's. This was a major disaster for the district ,as there could not be no more socials, dances, pictures or charitable functions until a new building erected. People had the goal is to raise $5,000 in donations, which with cash in hand it will provide a total 10,000, enabling use to seek a long to commence the construction of the building. The new community centre will provide facilities for a hall with seating capacity for 500 a smaller hall for a gymnasium and a hobby room,
