Gold

Gold bought people to Emerald.  By finding gold people got a reward of 100 pound.  Six people got the reward from Melbourne.   The gold office was made out of logs and long strips of bark off trees.  They were finding gold in 1851 in the Woori Yallock and Yarra river area.  The first gold was in a creek called Monkey Poo Creek. Later on  someone found out it was only Wombat Poo.L ife was very harsh in the Emerald goldfields.

Emerald in the  1800 S      

     In the 1800's the gold  encouraged people to come to Emerald. The people moved from place to place finding new gold areas.

                  There was untracked  wilderness and crystal  clear waters with gold. At the height of the Emerald gold rush there was over 2,000 miners in amongst them there was also a lot of Chinese people.         

It was getting hard to travel in the mushy conditions to deliver timber and plants.So the people decided to build a train to deliver all their timber to Upper Ferntree Gully. That train was called Puffing Billy and it still runs today. Also a big nursery was established and it was called Nobelius nursery and it was the biggest nursery in the Southern hemisphere.
