GRADE 5 CAMP!

PHILLIP ISLAND

By Samantha Pictor & Amy Dickson.

On the 18/3/97 grade five went on a camp to Phllip Island. We stopped off at The Tooradin Marine Life Centre (right). Jack took us on his boat through the Mangroves & we went around Snake Island. It is called Snake Island because the Aborigines believed the Rainbow Serpent made it. We reached the Bunyip hole & a student was told to thump the boat. The thumping woke the Bunyip & the Bunyip blew bubbles that were very big.

Then we went in the aquarium (left) & we saw a banjo shark, hermit crab, crab, a crab like a king crab, NO octopus, sea star, sea horses, sea squirt’s & sea anemones. The octopus wasn’t there because they said, one of the octopus jumped out of the tank & in the morning it was dead. There was a touch tank that had hermit crab, crab, sea star, sea squirt & sea anemones. The types of sea star were 11-armed sea star, 5-armed sea star, cousin star & biscuit star.

At the Sea room a lady showed us what’s made with seaweed in it which was ice cream, vegimite & other delicious food. We saw a diorama of animals dieing from rubbish dumped in the sea. We saw rubbish that harm animals the most which were plastic bags, fishing net & 1 other thing. Then we saw harpoons, whale bones & from a clean clear ocean to a filthy & polluted ocean diorama where you have to look in goggles to see the diorama.

OFF TO PHILLIP ISLAND NOW!

We put our bags outside the rooms 1-8 & went to get free drinks from the drink machine & then we left for the Koala (left) Museum & we saw lots of koalas & one was very close & it was very cute. We saw them feeding the Koalas &then we went back to camp. We got our stuff & fought over who gets what bed. After dinner we got our torches & went on a night hike to look for Koalas & Possums.

Day 2!!!!!!

The next day we went to Amazing Things & we played mini golf & went in the challenge maze where you had to find 4 flags & then the exit. Then we played little puzzles until the bus arrived. Then we went on the bus or a tour of Phillip Island. We went to the Nobbies (right), Cowes (left) & the Penguin parade Museum.(have a look yourself at www.penguins.org.au ) The Museum had touch screen computers & 1 real live penguin & nesting boxes. At the Nobbies we saw the blowhole & more nesting boxes with 1 with a baby penguin outside. Then at the Cowes we saw rock pools (below left). That night we played sports where you had to pick up all these sports equipment take it to the next person in the line & so on. Then we put a chezzle on our straw that was in our mouths & run up & down the track then with no hands pass it to the next person & so on. Last of all we had to put on stockings & gloves then up & down the track again then off they go & on to the next person & so on.

Day 3!!!!!!

The next day we walked all the way to Smiths Beach & on the way we saw a rabbit without a left ear & dead then a headless seagull with it’s legs in the air. At the beach we had races & built sand sculptures (left) then we went to the rock pools & found tons of sea stars, crabs, 1 Blue-Ringed Octopus, sea cactus & sea anemones. Then a long boring walk back to camp. We watched TV then went down to the drink machines. That night we did plays & 1 had a smashing end. Tennis Idiots were really funny cause an actor went dunny then another actor slipped on the racquet & fell.

Last Day!!!!!!

The last day finally came & we checked out San Remo to see the pelicans been fed then to The Giant Worm, but first we saw Koalas, Wombats, Dingoes, Emus & Kangaroos which we fed. Then we saw Giant South Glippsland Worm, a worms view of the world, a worm tunnel to crawl through & a worms stomach that lead to the other half of the Worm. Also there were some snakes. Then back home.
