Conundrum - 1991

Brief Introduction

• Deep below the Earth's surface lies the Kingdom of Whit where the Joke Gnomes invent all of the world's humour. Each masterpiece is filtered into the world of humans who, strangely enough, think that they invented it.

  • Ruled by King and Queen Teratif and guided by Governor Gag, Lord Limerick, Lady Lark and Baron and Baroness Buffoonery (Councillors on the Board of Jokes), the gnomes continue to write the definitive tone of humour, the Great Book of Jokes.

• But there are flies in the ointment! The wicked Punella (a former Councillor) and her offsider Orff (brother of Nick) are plotting to replace the fine humour of the Joke Gnomes with their evil punnery and have invented the dreadful pun bomb to achieve their ends.

  • And then one night the Great Book of Jokes is stolen!

• As the gnomes become restless, Wisecrack the King's adviser, calls in a human detective to solve the crime. Curiously, this detective has no sense of humour!

Can an apprentice Jester and a human with no sense of humour solve the puzzling conundrum and return the missing book? Can they evade the clutches of the Bad Joke Monster? Can they stand up to Punella's Orrful puns? Can the audience?

THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT...............

'91 was Conundrum. That was a play about all the jokes in the world, how they were made, where 
they went, and what happened when they were stolen.
